Disputes

It is a common problem in South Africa that interpretations of regulations applicable to electrical installations may vary dependant on the age of an electrical installation. Such problems may be further aggravated due to alterations to an electrical installation which may have been done at any point from construction of the original part of the installation. The AIA can assist by applying measures of control, which will ensure that both electrical contractors and the public are protected by:

  • Regulating work done by unregistered electrical contractors and endeavoring to ensure that installations are done by registered, qualified electricians.
  • Assisting in solving technical disputes between clients and contractors. A number of instances have occurred where users have had illegal electrical installation work done which manifests itself when selling the property. It is often the case that the seller blames a registered person for faults following an inspection and test for defects where the registered person carries no responsibility. The AIA will assist in protecting the registered person in these cases.
  • Confirming the correct interpretation of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993 and the SANS 10142 - Code of Practice for the Wiring of Premises regulations.
  • Providing on site advice as required.
